The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) creates technical documents that provide requirements and specifications to ensure that products, in this case wheelchairs, cushions, and postural support devices, meet the expected quality. There are two standards: ISO 7176 Wheelchairs and ISO 16840 Wheelchair seating. The table below lists the section of the ISO 7176. The International Society of Wheelchair Professionals Standards Working Group is developing additional standards for adverse environments, currently in draft ISO format.
Individual countries are encouraged to adopt the international standards to their own context. Two examples of countries that have adopted the ISO standards are Kenya and India.
